Quick Guide to Tax Credits

Tax Credits are payments from the government that you could be entitled to if you have children.  There are 3 different types of tax credits:

Child Tax Credits: if you are responsible for children, you may qualify for Child Tax Credits. You don’t have to be working to claim Child Tax Credits.

Working Tax Credits: these are available for people who do or don't have children and who work 16 hours or more a week, but are on a low income.

Child Care element of Working Tax Credit: help with your childcare costs.
You may qualify for these even if you don’t qualify for Working Tax Credits.

Your entitlement will depend on your household income.
Visit: www.gov.uk/qualify-tax-credits-quick-questionnaire to see if you qualify – you may be pleasantly surprised!

Unfortunately you can not claim online so you will need to get a claim pack by phoning the Tax Credit Helpline:
0345 300 3900

It’s REALLY important to keep the Tax Credit office up to date with ANY changes in your personal circumstances and income as soon as they happen.  That way, you are more likely to avoid being in an overpayment situation and face having to pay large sums of money back, and you can ensure you are receiving the right amount.

Benefits and Entitlements for Expectant and New Parents

Having a baby is expensive – there’s no getting around that!  Thankfully there is help available to expectant and new parents.
Here’s a quick guide.

Sure Start Maternity Grant
A grant of £500 is available to parents-to-be on low incomes to help with preparing all those baby essentials.  To see if you qualify for the grant, please visit:   http://bit.ly/8nHu7E

Healthy Start Scheme
Healthy Start is a government scheme that provides vouchers for free milk, fresh fruit and vegetables, infant formula and vitamins to certain pregnant women and children in families on low incomes.  Visit: www.healthystart.nhs.uk/ to find out if you are eligible.
You can get an application form from your midwife or health visitor or complete it online.
Lots of shops except the vouchers – look out for the Healthy Start sticker or ask in store.

Free prescriptions and dental care
All mums-to-be qualify for a prescription exemption certificate once their pregnancy has been certified by a doctor or midwife.  You need to complete form FW8 and they will need to sign it.  You’ll be sent a handy little credit card type certificate that you can keep in your wallet.
Just remember to mention it at the chemist or dentist when you visit!
It entitles you to free prescritions and dental care so get one as soon as possible.  They last until a year after the day your baby is expected.  For more info visit: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1644.aspx

Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP)
To help you take time off work with your baby, you may be entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) which is a payment from the government and is paid to you via your employer.
(You may also be lucky enough to have this enhanced by an employer’s maternity scheme).
For more details on SMP and to find out if you qualify please visit the Pennies 4 Parents Blog:

Maternity Allowance
Mums-to-be who do not qualify for SMP may still be entitled to Maternity Allowance.
This is also paid by the Government but direct to your bank account for 39 weeks.
For more information please visit:

Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP)
Most working Fathers are entitled to Statutory Paternity Pay for 2 weeks after the birth of their baby.
The current rate is £128.73 per week.
New Dads are now also eligible to take Additional Paternity Leave and Pay if the Mother returns to work before the end of her Statutory 39 weeks of Maternity Pay.
For more information on Paternity Pay please see:

Zest Payroll Solutions - Claire Meredith

A while ago I wrote this piece for another blog: www.joannedewberry.co.uk so I thought I'd share it with you.  It's about a typical day here at Pennies 4 Parents and Zest Payroll HQ and the juggling act of running a business with 2 teeny "helpers".  I hope you enjoy it.

A Day in the Life of Zest Payroll Solutions

I don’t need to set an alarm clock anymore.
I have one of 3 wake up calls:

Teeny Man (15 months) crying for his morning milk
Little Man (4) jumping on the bed
Little Man shouting “I’ve done a poo poo” at the top of his voice from the
bathroom (this is not my preferred way to start the morning!)

So, with that it’s up and at it, desperately trying to get all 3 of us dressed and fed by 8.30.  For some reason the 20 minutes from then is always put on fast forward in a jumble of shoes, coats, choosing today’s must have cuddly companion and a suitable random object for today’s colour table at Pre-School.

With little man safely deposited, Teeny Man and I head home for a play.  If I’m really lucky, he will start to show his “I’d actually quite like a little nap please, Mummy” signs and I’ll swiftly settle him down and head to the Zest Payroll Solutions’ “office”.  I love that term!  My “office” consists of the computer desk and a multitude of shelves tucked away in the corner of the dining room.  I long for the day the boys can share a room so I can claim the spare room as my own.
I may have an hour to get my head into work mode.  With running payrolls for small/medium sized businesses and parents employing nannies, I am lucky in that the main bulk of work comes in during the last 2 weeks of the month as pay days are usually at the end.  There’s always other things to be working on though, be it marketing, making phone calls or doing the accounts and I’ve just started a new blog for parents too (www.pennies4parents.blogspot.com) so writing for that takes up lots of time.

After the Pre-School pick up and feeding the hungry monkeys, I sometimes have a little time after lunch to “pop back to the office” if I need to, while Little Man plays and the Teeny Man naps again (I am lucky having a very energetic baby who wears himself out a lot!).  If it’s something major I need to do, I’ll set Little Man up with some Play Dough or other dining table top friendly activity so that I can keep an eye on him and it’s actually rather nice to have someone to talk to.  Being a WAHM can be pretty lonely.

More feeding, bathing and story telling and it’s back to work for the evening.  This is when I most enjoy working – a couple of hours to really get stuck into it without any distractions (Daddy’s in charge then!).

Life as a Work At Home Mum is hectic, but I love being around for my boys and wouldn’t want it any other way!

Tax Credit Deadline – don’t save all your changes until 31st July!

As the Tax Credit Renewal deadline of 31st July fast approaches, I’d like to
re-iterate the importance of telling the Tax Credit office of changes to your circumstances at the time that they actually happen.
Please don’t save them all up until the renewal pack falls on your door mat!

If you have any kind of change in your personal life, work/self employment or childcare please pick up the phone and call the Tax Credit office as soon as you possibly can.
Leaving important changes to information until July could mean you are possibly being overpaid (a real nightmare) or that you are losing out on additional payments that you could be receiving at a time you need them most.

If you have not yet sent back your renewal form or given them a call please do so now.

Remember: if you do not contact them your payments will STOP!

Call the Tax Credit Helpline NOW on:   0845 300 3900
